Carpinteria is a small oceanside community south of Santa Barbara. It hosts the famous California Avocado Festival annually during the first week of October. Many of its 13,000 residents enjoy the proximity to then ocean without the higher price Santa Barbara County beachfront properties tend to fetch. Surfers like Kelly Slater own homes a few miles more south along the world-famous surf spot, Rincon.
